Some fall decor whispers. This one throws a party.

Bring glue and batteries

Air shipping rules keep both out of the box. A bottle of quick-dry tacky glue and fine tweezers make the build calmer.

About This Kit

Plaza de los Muertos is a DIY book nook kit from CuteBee that builds a lit Día de los Muertos street scene to stand between your books. A skeleton guitarist plays in a narrow alley lined with marigolds, strings of papel picado hang overhead, and the LED lighting switches the whole plaza on at dusk.

It is one of CuteBee's more ornate designs. The layered paper details are why it photographs so well, and they also set the pace of the build: the paper work wants tweezers and good light, and the papel picado banners take the longest. It is rated Steady Hands on the ShelfWorlds scale, a comfortable second kit for anyone with one build behind them.

The scene is busy and bright, so it looks best at eye level against darker spines, where the banners and marigolds have something to stand out from. It goes up as fall decor and has no reason to come down on November 2. As a gift, it suits someone who keeps an ofrenda each year, or a builder who wants a more detailed project than their first kit.
